            Joseph,

            Andhra Pradesh,
            India.

Dear Joseph,
Your letter arrived a few days ago but I had to think about it for a while before I decided to answer it. You see, it came as a bit of a shock to learn that you were married as I was expecting you not to be. I was expecting to have a single man as my penfriend, but you wrote a very nice letter and so finally I decided to write a reply to you.

I have enclosed another photo of myself for you. I hope you like this one too. This time I am in western dress, in a mini-skirt too. Which do you like the best, me in a sari or in the mini skirt? I mostly wear western clothing in New Zealand as it is so much more practical than a sari. I know that in India woman wear their sari to do all kinds of work but I am more comfortable in my ‘normal’ clothes.
If you want me too perhaps I can send you a photo of myself in my swimming togs. Would you like that?
By “broad-minded conversation” I take it then that you want to talk about more sexy things. Well, what do you have in mind? I’m interested to find out.

                That’s all for now.
                        Your friend.
                                Shanti.

Hello from Anne.
A few months later, Shandra and I were talking about what might have happened if this correspondence had continued.
The outcome of this conversation was that we decided to continue the correspondence between ourselves just for fun and develop it into a series of sexy letters. We made a swap which may be a bit confusing. I took over writing Shanti’s letters since she was supposed to be very Western and from New Zealand. She became my main character who as she developed, began taking on a bit of my real personality. Meanwhile, Shandra began writing the letters from Joseph since she was more used to Indian speech and culture. Late when Joseph’s wife, Lizamoa began writing too, Shandra took her as a character. Lizamoa from Letters has a very similar personality to the real-life Shandra.
For a while, we continued writing like this with each developing our own characters but over time our work has become more blended with other writers joining us too. Now with five different writers getting involved, we get together for meetings to decide where the next few letters/stories are going and to review each other's writing. This has resulted in much better stories but has tended to blur the sharp division between us writers. By 2017 the writer's team had grown to nine with a few others helping too.
A new theme began in this letter with Joseph encouraging Shanti to send more and more sexy and daring photos. As time went by I think Shanti became quite turned-on sending sexy photos to a guy she hardly knew. We were only seventeen at the time and the thought of sending such sexy photos to a stranger was a big turn-on for us too even though we weren’t actually sending the photos for real, just writing about sending them. At that time we would have never been game enough to send sexy photos for real even if we knew someone to send them to.

Joseph,
The Game Reserve,
Andhra Pradesh,
India.

            Shanti,
            Titirangi,
            Auckland,
            New Zealand.

Dear Shanti,
I was happy to hear from you. I put that advert in sometimes ago and was never receiving a single reply. Now after all this time I am coming to know that you are writing to me. Yes, it is a surprise for me to be receiving this letter from you.
As you of course know, my name is Joseph Koor. I am being a game warden at the Kedish Game Reserve where we are having a large range of native Indian animals which are kept as much as possible in their natural surroundings.
I live with my wife in a small house in the small town at the northern borders to the park. My wife is working as a teacher in a nearby school. We are being very happy in this place. The people are all being very nice and the countrysides is very beautiful. It is a very nice place to be and we are liking it very much.
I was very pleased to be receiving your photograph. You are the very beautiful woman. I have enclosed my photograph for your inspection and I am hoping you are liking it. Please tell me if you are liking my photograph.
I have seen videos of New Zealand and it is the very beautiful place. We would like to see that place one day if we are getting the chance to see.
Let me end my letter by saying, I am happy to be knowing you as my penfriend. I also wish that this will be starting as a long and happy friendship.

                Your friend,
                        Joseph.

P.S. By “broad-minded conversation” I mean being able to talk about those things of more personal nature.

Hello from Anne.

This is the only letter that the real Joseph from India ever wrote to me. It is almost completely unchanged except for the addition of the P.S. answer to Letter 1 regarding broadminded conversation.

When I learned that Joseph was married, I talked with Anne about it and then decided not to reply to him. Joseph did send another letter to me but I decided not to reply to this one either so the real correspondence between Joseph and I ended at this point.

Letter 1 Shanti’s First Letter.

Shanti,
Titirangi,
Auckland,
New Zealand.

            Joseph,
            The Game Reserve,
            Andhra Pradesh,
            India.

Dear Joseph,
I believe you may be surprised to receive this letter from me. My name is Shanti Singh and I am a New Zealand born Indian.
The reason why I am writing is to answer the advert you published in Five Continents Magazine. I am very interested in having a penfriend from India and I hope that this is the beginning of a long and lasting friendship.
Well, perhaps you wish to know more about me. As I’ve already mentioned, my name is Shanti and I am 24 years old. Please find my photo enclosed. I work as a clerk in a share broking company in the centre of Auckland. I live with my parents near the western edge of the city in an area called Titirangi. This township lies close to a large area of parkland in the Waitakere Ranges, to the west of Auckland City.
Well in future letters I’ll tell you more about myself and about where I live but for now, I wish to know more about you. I notice that you live in or near a game reserve. What is this like? Is this where you work? Please write and tell me about yourself?
As I said, I hope that this is the start of a long and lasting friendship.
                From your new friend,
                                Shanti Singh.

P.S. What did you mean in your advert by “broad-minded conversation?

Hello from Shandra.

This is the letter which started everything off. As far as we know this final published version is very similar to the original letter which I sent to Joseph in India. There was a penfriend club which produced a magazine called Five Continents and I got Joseph’s name from that club.
The few changes from the real letter are; - First, we changed Shandra's name and age; second, we changed her address from Waitakere to Titirangi; and third, she said her job was a stock broking clerk. These changes were made to fit in with later letters as we developed the character of Shanti.
The final change we made was the addition of the P.S. about a broadminded conversation. We did this when Anne and I began writing the letters to each other because we wanted the letters to become a lot sexier. We decided to begin this sexy theme right from the start.
Well now go off and read this letter which you will find via the links on this page.
